MECOSTA, OSCEOLA COUNTIES — Staff at Big Rapids and Reed City libraries have pulled out all the stops to celebrate fall fun.
Big Rapids Community Library, 426 S. Michigan Ave., Big Rapids, kicks off October with a spooky scavenger hunt. Mr. Bones needs help. His friend, Skelly-Ton, has lost his bones. All month long, children can help find Skelly-Ton’s bones, which have been scattered throughout the library.
While at the library, kids can pick up a bat coloring sheet to decorate.
“Use your imagination,” library staff said in a news release. “It can be as realistic or as batty as you’d like.”
Return it by Oct. 16 to be enter into a contest. The winner will receive a “fang-tastic” prize. Contest is open to ages 12 and younger.
In addition, BRCL will host three Spooktacular events at the Anna Howard Shaw Memorial Park outside the library. In case of inclement weather, check for cancellation notifications at www.facebook.com/BigRapidsCommunityLibrary.
• Magic for Beginners: 4-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19. Budding magicians ages 9-13 will get a magic lesson with magician John Dudley. Registration is required for this event. Call the library at 231-796-5234 or email Sarah Welch at [email protected].
• Paranormal University, Ghost Hunting 101: 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22. Members of the Michigan Area Paranormal Investigation Team will teach the basics of ghost hunting. See evidence of paranormal activity collected from around Michigan including in Big Rapids and at Ferris State University. Bring your own chair.
• Fall Festival Events: 3-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30. Join Mr. Howard for crafts, a cookie-walk and more beginning at 3 p.m. Then, at 6:30 p.m., there will be a family friendly movie. Attendees will receive a treat and a book to keep, while supplies last.
REED CITY LIBRARY GOES CLASSIC
For classic chills, check out the weekly creature feature at Reed City Area District Library, 829 S. Chestnut St., Reed City. At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, it will show the original Dracula from 1931, followed by the 1950s sci-fi flick, Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Not into Halloween? How about making an autumn wreath frame? From noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, the library will host a workshop geared towards adults. Class size is limited to 20 crafters, so registration is required.
For the kids, Ms. Cyndi will feature falling leaves, pumpkins and ghosts during story hour Oct. 20 and Oct. 27. Story Hour happens at 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday, and includes stories, crafts, games and more for preschoolers.
